Earlier, when Duke Xiang first became the
sovereign of Qi,he failed to follow any regular
procedure. In the 12th month, in winter, Duker
Xiang of Qi went on an outing to Gufen and then
proceeded to hunt at Mount Beiqiu, where he
encountered a large wild boar." It is Gongzi
pengsheng!" shouted one of his attendants. The
duke was enraged."Would Pengsheng dare to show
himself?" he bellowed With that, he shot at the
creature. The boar stood up on its hind legs and
wailed, like a human being. Terrified, the duke
fell down in his carriage, injured his foot and
lost his shoe. When Duke Xiang returned home, he
berated his attendant Fei, demanding the shoe.
Failing to get it, the sovereign beat the
attendant till he had drawn blood. Fei dashed out
of the palace and encountered the rebels at the
gate. They seized the palace attendant and bound
him, but Fei said,"how ould I dare try to stop
you?" With that, he doffed his robe and showed
them the wounds on his back, so the rebels
trusted him. Fei asked to be allowed to go into
the palace ahead of them. When he had done so, he
concealed the Duke and then emerged once more,
this time to attack the rebels. He died fighting
at the palace gate.Shizhi Fentu,a minor official,
was also killed at the foot of the entrance
stairs. The rebels finally entered the palace and
assassinated the minor official Mengyang, who was
in the Duke's bed, But when they looked carefully
at hime theydiscovered that he was not the Duke.
Then they spied the Duke's feet sticking out from
under a door, and beheaded him on the spot.
Finally, they set up Wuzhi as ruler of Qi.
